Edward Derbyshire - Shakespeare Between the Sheets

Shakespeare Between The Sheets

The timeless words of Shakespeare, interspersed with piano classics, told and played live in this one-person show.

New to Willow Globe, Edward Derbyshire presents new takes on the words of some of Shakespeare's most famous characters, performed with live piano music as part of each character's journey.

Nicholas Bottom has always dreamt of being a performer. At Nick’s insistence, when just eleven years old, his father grudgingly bought Nicholas an old keyboard, and he taught himself the fundamentals before attending lessons with a purple-haired grandmother down the lane (you know, the one with the Afghan hound called Baboushka). Always in the background and spurned by his peers, who considered him rather ridiculous and certainly no scholar, Nick put his desire to take to the stage on hold for many years…until now. But, just as a peascod will expand and finally burst when exposed to the sun, so has Bottom at last come forth into the light of day (and moonlight) to share his story with you. With more than generous help from a very famous playwright, Nicholas also explores the nature and environment that surrounds us all, using several of said playwright’s most beloved characters and moments to highlight what we town-dwellers see, yet do not see, in a passionate invocation of the need to save our planet.

Much of this is a story you may know. Join Bottom on his journey as he narrates how it all began, muses upon the environment, falls into a daydream, and finally brings his masterpiece, hidden for all these years in the bole of an oak tree in the forest, to fruition at last. Though, as we all know, the fairies at the bottom of the garden might have the last say…

At your gracious pleasure, as part of his story, Bottom would like to play you many pieces, including:

Prelude in C, J.S. Bach

Round and round the garden, N. Bottom

Abendsblume (with a naughty twinkle), B. Heller

The ‘Moonlight’ Sonata, L. van Beethoven

The Ousel Cock, N. Bottom

You Spotted Snakes, N. Bottom

O for the wings, F. Mendelssohn

Prelude in C, D. Shostakovich

Starry Dome, G. Nevada

Give Glimmering Light, N. Bottom

Of course, Nicholas wasn’t the only one to think of such a sequence of events. The Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi fell asleep in his garden and dreamt he was a beautiful butterfly. He flew here and there, then, as a butterfly fell asleep. In his dream, the handsome butterfly dreamt that he was the philosopher Zhuangzi, before falling into slumber. The philosopher Zhuangzi then woke up. However, he did not know whether he was the Zhuangzi who has dreamt of the butterfly, or the Zhuangzi in the butterfly’s dream.

Perhaps Bottom will write a play about this one day…

Unversed - Beckis Cooper

UNVERSED …

Written & Performed by Beckis Cooper

Directed by the award-winning Rachel Fowler.

Unversed … An eager young actor in the city of London has got her hands on a discarded copy of Shakespeare’s first folio. Newly printed and the hottest publication in town, all the plays exist together for the very first time. There's only one problem: the parts are all too out of reach for women to play on the public stage. Come along and be part of the rehearsal as Antonia gives herself permission to speak the verse and explore the profession of being a woman - both onstage and off.

UNVERSED was commissioned and created for the 400TH anniversary of Shakespeare’s First Folio for Keats House in Hampstead where it premiered to great reviews and has since toured to Doctor Johnson’s House in Fleet Street, John Clare Cottage and The Painted Room in Oxford and will go to Stratford in 2025.

Praise for ‘Unversed’ …

“Marvellous concept with incredible characters - a treat for any Shakespeare fan."

“Just been to Unversed: what a brilliant, passionate, intimate and thoughtful exploration of Shakespeare’s well versed ladies. From Desdemona to Lady Macbeth, I thought Beckis was utterly captivating."

" Brilliant! I loved every minute of it! What a joy it was tonight - to hear Shakespeare acted so truthfully and with such beautiful expression.”

"Superb acting and wonderfully interactive with the audience."

"An outstanding performance from an outstanding actor."

King Lear Retold - Debs Newbold

Willow Globe’s favourite storyteller returns with King Lear Retold

With a passionate command of Shakespeare’s verse and startlingly powerful physicality, Debs Newbold’s storytelling will catapult you deep into the world of Shakespeare's epic tragedy in King Lear Retold.

Tell me my daughters, which of you...doth love us most?

An old king, afraid to be old. A daughter abandoned for speaking plainly. Two sisters warped by ill-treatment. A kingdom in turmoil. When Lear resigns his position by dividing his kingdom in three, he puts an outrageous test to his daughters. Their answers are not all that he expected. What he discovers about himself he does not wish to know.

Deeply felt and often uproariously funny; King Lear Retold makes Shakespeare accessible to everyone in a bold and compelling performance that has all the power and grace of the original text, presented in a charismatic, thoroughly modern style. Created for a sell-out show at Hay Literary Festival, toured internationally and performed to acclaim at Shakespeare’s Globe, this is a thrilling, compelling solo performance.

“Spellbinding and wonderful” – Hay Literary Festival

Dauntless - Grace O’Malley, pirate queen - Debs Newbold

★★★★ “energising and entrancing” - Hector Gilchrist, eFestivals

Dauntless: Grace O’Malley, Pirate Queen

Debs Newbold gleefully delivers the boisterous, remarkable and inspirational story of her hero: Grainne ni Mhaille – Grace O’Malley – legendary Irish clan chief and queen of the sea.

Stowing away aboard her father’s ship aged 8, Grace became a 16th century force of nature. A multilingual, seafaring weapons expert, leader of 2000 men, rebel, politician, kingmaker and slayer, prodigious lover, avenging hero and notorious pirate. Best of all, she was real.

From the west of Ireland to the court of Elizabeth I, from wild youth to even wilder old age, Dauntless is an epic celebration of uproarious storytelling, high drama and one fascinating 16th century feminist. No knights in shining armour need apply.

Running Time: 75 -80 mins straight through

Age Guidance: For adults and children 12+.

Romeo and Juliet - Sun and Moon Theatre

Sun & Moon Theatre are returning to The Willow Globe after last year's sold-out 'Much Ado About Nothing' with a vibrant, emotional, and bold production of Shakespeare’s most popular drama of star-crossed lovers and warring families. The feud between the Montagues and Capulets has been reimagined as a rivalry between two family-run movie studios in the 1930s.

Touted as the studio’s latest ‘Golden Couple’, Juliet, the current ‘Girl Next Door’ has been matched up with matinee idol, Paris. Former child star, Romeo, is initially besotted by studio ‘It Girl’ Rosaline, until he falls for Juliet at the Capulets’ premiere after-party. Their lives controlled by this turbulent industry and period, Juliet and Romeo find joy, solace and excitement in their hasty romance, a desire for something true in an artificial world, and most of all, a hope for a better future.

But comedy meets tragedy as fate has other ideas for them; behind the glitz and glamour of the film industry lies dark secrets and insecurities, and when their defiant union faces great opposition, it leads to violence, chaos, and despair.

Suitable for all ages, join us on a summer’s night for the world’s most famous love story, featuring live music, fights, humour, and tears, as we explore the love and conflict between friends, families, and couples, that still rings true today.

Macbeth Retold - Debs Newbold

We are thrilled to be welcoming Debs Newbold back to the Willow Globe for the third year running. Debs Newbold is a multi-award winning performance storyteller who creates fresh, playful work that gets deep under the skin.

Debs is a passionate and skilled performer with a gift for bringing the epic out of the everyday. She has made and performed work for the Royal Opera House, the BBC, Hay Festival and the RSC as well as Shakespeare's Globe where she has a long association. She also takes her work to theatres, festival stages and community spaces all over the world.

Debs’ work spans myth, legend and new writing and has seen her described as “a master of words and space” (Views From the Gods) and “sublime, a consummate performer” (Sam Lee). Her genre- defying collaborations with renowned director John Wright (Told by an Idiot) have helped re- define contemprary storytelling, resulting in two highly acclaimed shows; the award winning Lost In Blue, and Under Her Skin. Her one-woman re-tellings of Shakespeare’s tragedies have toured internationally and helped create an entire strand of storytelling work within Shakespeare’s Globe, where Debs trains new tellers.

★★★★★ “the atmosphere was incredible...one unfeasibly talented woman- Views From the Gods

Come and be pulled deep into the world of The Bard's darkest tragedy with this alchemic solo performance from theatre artist and storyteller Debs Newbold.

From worthy warrior to marked man, from hero to murderer; Macbeth's fate is set from the start in this tense and gripping re-telling of Macbeth, the third in Debs Newbold’s trilogy of re-imagined Shakespeare stories.

Originally commissioned by the Hay Literary Festival, a sell-out at Shakespeare's Globe and the talk of festivals both in the UK and abroad, this is an unforgettable, shimmering work of performance storytelling that will haunt you for a very long time to come.

Julius Caesar - The Factory Theatre

“Are not you moved, when all the sway of earth Shakes like a thing unfirm?”

The Factory return with a lean and hungry look at Shakespeare's tragedy of political and personal conflict. Contemporary parallels abound in this forensic tale of honour and hubris, ambition, conspiracy and betrayal.

A fresh Factory take on this story for our times, thought to be the first play performed at the Globe Theatre, and one of those that would have been lost without the First Folio.

Tickets: Adults £15, U16s £7.50, Family ticket (2 adults, 2 U16s) £37.50

Imagining The Real

An elderly man in a once fine coat, braces himself against the wind.

In his right hand a battered suitcase.  With his left he holds tightly to the right hand of his granddaughter. He feels her shiver.

What stories does he carry?  What stories will she live to hear?

Lowering the suitcase he stoops to tighten the woollen scarf around her neck. Then grasping their lives by the worn leather handle once more, they take the first of many, many steps into our future.

We invite you to join us at Penlanole once again to Imagine the Real.

Sunday 5th March - 11am to 4pm

It's a good time to be human

Imagining the Real - is an interactive, multigenerational drama workshop. We are inviting families, individual adults and young people to join us.

As You Like It - Willow Globe Community Theatre - on Tour!

The Willow Globe Company are going on tour! On Sunday January 29th, they will present their production of As You Like It at Wyeside Arts Centre - Builth Wells.

Information about the venue can be found on their website: https://www.wyeside.co.uk

Willow Globe Company welcome you to Arden.

Love, laughter, music and philosophy join hands under the greenwood tree in this sunniest of Shakespeare’s comedies.

"We loved the commitment of all the cast and how well you all told the story. We laughed a lot and we laughed out loud. Over the past few days, we've really enjoyed recalling moments from the production and have enjoyed how our talk about the production has led us into reflecting on the world and our talk about the world as taken us back to the production.”

“There was a directness and authenticity to the acting and to the production as a whole which allowed it to resonate powerfully. The question of whether we embrace humanity or whether we reject and suppress it was strikingly shown and given added poignancy by the music - particularly the singing - which was so beautiful."

Tickets: Adults £12, U16s £6, Family ticket £30

For more information please email info@shakespearelink.org.uk

Tickets available on line or in person from Wyeside Arts Centre - Telephone 01982 552555 https://www.wyeside.co.uk/events/asyoulikeit
